Campus Recreation Enhancement Fund

The Campus Recreation Enhancement Fund (CREF) was created to help ensure that high quality recreation programs, equipment and facilities remains diverse, convenient, accessible, equitable and affordable to all students.

Organizations and departments that apply for funding must show that their request will have a positive impact on student life and facilitate a healthy and active lifestyle for students.

The Campus Recreation Enhancement Fund Council is responsible for allocating funds and reporting to the Students' Union on an annual basis.

Funded projects

Below are some featured projects CREF has funded in past years.

Outdoor gym

2017–2018

As student needs change, the outdoor gym circuit provides an opportunity for students and staff to become more aware of their campus environment, engage in recreational opportunities outside, try new ways of staying active and connect with other students and staff on campus. In focusing on the infrastructure needed (e.g. outdoor gym equipment) to create a trail circuit as well as active and passive programming for students and staff to actively utilize the trail circuit in this funding proposal, we believe this will enhance our organization by improving access to recreational opportunities in the built environment.

Beach volleyball courts on North Campus

2018-2019

Campus and Community Recreation is consistently looking for new ways to introduce students and staff to sporting and leisure activities that they wouldn't typically have access to. Located on Lister Residence, the beach volleyball courts give student residents additional opportunities for recreation. By expanding recreation services outside the Van Vliet Complex, we can use spaces like the beach volleyball courts to engage students where they are. Having these spaces in places like Lister Residence assists with improving student physical well-being in residence, as well as opportunities to build community through team-based sports.

Outdoor activity space

2019-2020

Located between the Student Union Building and the Van Vliet Complex, this outdoor space for table tennis and cornhole allows pedestrians a convenient opportunity to engage in play. Having the outdoor space increases the visibility of our organization, allowing us to reach students, staff, and community members who may not regularly use CCR indoor facilities. Our goal is to provide more opportunities for creation across campus while being accessible and convenient.

Gaming room

2021-2022

Recreation is more than just sports and fitness, but leisure as well. As e-sports continues to grow in popularity, we believe in providing students with alternate ways to engage in leisure activities and build communities with fellow gaming enthusiasts. The dedicated e-sports room is an inclusive environment regardless of physical capability or skill level anyone can come in and enjoy a large array of video game systems and genres. We believe that by providing video game-related programming, we are providing an outlet to improve the well-being of students and staff.

Outdoor basketball courts

2020-2021

The outdoor basketball courts provide another opportunity for students, staff, and community members to engage in outdoor physical activity on campus, especially those who commute on the west side of North Campus. The purpose of outdoor activities like the basketball courts allows for quick and easy access to physical activity. The outdoor basketball courts provide CCR with additional visibility from the surrounding communities and an opportunity for them to utilize our space and be part of our campus.
