Admission Criteria and Application Process

MN admission Criteria and Application Requirements

Academic Qualifications

An undergraduate degree in Nursing, usually 4 years in duration, with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the 海角社区, or an equivalent institution.

The admission GPA will be calculated based on the last 60 units of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.

Prerequisite Courses

One undergraduate course in statistics and one in research methods with a final grade of B or higher in each, preferably completed within the past 6 years.

Applicants who do not meet this requirement may be required to complete an undergraduate statistics and/or research course prior to beginning the MN program or complete a statistics refresher course.

Clinical Experience (for NP applicants)

MN applicants who desire to become eligible for entry-to-practice as a nurse practitioner require 4,500 hours of registered nursing practice, appropriate to the program category prior to entering the program, i.e.,

  • Adult RNs who have worked with adult populations
  • Neonatal RNs who have worked in at least level III or higher NICU environments
  • Family/All Ages RNs who have worked with adults and children across some diversity of settings

Students will be tested on physical assessment skills at the beginning of NURS 516 (Adult/FAA) or NURS 518 (Neonate).

Note: International applicants who do not have RN registration and clinical work experience in Canada cannot be admitted to the advanced clinical (NP) focus.

English Language Proficiency

All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency prior to admission, either by possession of a degree from an academic institution recognized by the 海角社区, where the language of instruction is English, or a satisfactory score on an approved English language examination within the last 2 years as described below:

  • TOEFL: Overall score of at least 587 (paper-based), or a total score of 97 with a score of at least 22 on each of the individual skill areas (Internet-based);
  • IELTSOverall score of 7.0 with the following minimum scores: Listening-7, Reading-6.5, Writing-6.5, Speaking-7.0;
  • DuolingoOverall score of 130 with no subscore below 120

Note: Graduate programs reserve the right to require a further demonstration of English language proficiency. The Faculty of Nursing may require applicants to successfully complete EAP 550. Applicants who currently hold RN licensure with CRNA or another Canadian nursing regulatory body may be exempt from ELP requirements.

Required Documents for Application Consideration

Before starting your application, we suggest gathering the necessary documents to complete and submit your application (e.g. transcripts, degree certificates, English Language Proficiency scores, referee contact information, and other documents required by the department offering the program to which you're applying).

If you require assistance or have questions regarding the application process, please contact us through your  or refer to the FAQ section of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) website.

Application Documents Required:

  • A completed online application for graduate admission. Please note, unsubmitted applications are deleted 21 calendar days after you begin your application or the application deadline (whichever comes first).
  • An official transcript issued to you by the post-secondary institution (preferred) or a transcript/student record obtained from a self-serve web system of the post-secondary institution (must meet the criteria listed in the Application Requirements for Academic Documents).

  • Three letters of reference (two from an academic setting and one from a nursing practice setting).
    • For thesis applicants, one reference letter must be from your proposed supervisor or co-supervisors, and within the letter, confirm their agreement to supervise.
    • If possible, students seeking admission to the program in a specific advanced practice specialty area should provide a letter of support regarding their clinical expertise in that specialty area.
    • Reference letters must be written in English.

  • A completed MN Applicant Background Information Form (Forms and Guidelines - Admission Documents). The required form is also available in the Documents section of the online application.

When considering an application to the thesis-based Master of Nursing program, it is the responsibility of the applicant to connect with a faculty member who could appropriately supervise the thesis project that you intend to develop.

The role of the graduate supervisor is to provide guidance and direction in the selection of the thesis topic and research method. Thus, the graduate supervisor must have the expertise required to support the intended research project.

Thesis applicants must confirm the name of the faculty member who has agreed to serve as their graduate supervisor prior to application assessment.

Finding a Supervisor

Application Review Process

An application will not be considered until all supporting documentation has been uploaded and the application has been submitted.

It is the student's responsibility to ensure the completeness of their applications by planning ahead to make certain that all documents will be uploaded to the online application by the deadline.

Each application is reviewed based on:
  • GPA in the final two years of the baccalaureate nursing program (or most recent 60 credits)
  • Grades in undergraduate research and statistics courses
  • Grades in any graduate courses
  • References
  • Nursing work experience
  • Expectations about the MN program
  • Career goals

MN Application Assessment

A recommendation is made by the Faculty of Nursing Graduate Admissions Committee to the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Nursing, who, in turn, makes a recommendation to the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS).

GPS makes the final decision to accept or decline a student’s application.

Note: Although the program has minimum requirements, competition for places is high, and meeting the minimum standard does not guarantee admission.

Important Information for students admitted to the MN program

The official admission letter for successful applicants is posted directly on the GSMS application.

All offers of admission are conditional (with the exception of students who have only completed previous education at the 海角社区). As noted in the official admission letter, official documents (transcripts, degree certificates, etc.) are required by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS). Documents must be sent directly from the post-secondary institution to the GPS Office.

Students admitted to the Clinical focus area should refer to the Clinical Requirements for Graduate Nursing Courses for information on obtaining Nurse Practitioner licensure.

Prior to beginning a Nursing graduate program, students must complete the 海角社区's Indigenous Canada Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). Screenshots with evidence of completing this course should be submitted to the Nursing Graduate Office (nugrad@ualberta.ca) prior to attending the first course of the program (further details provided on this webpage: Faculty of Nursing Graduate Programs and Admissions).
