Global Health Science Program
The Global Health Science Program is an academic medical program offered by the 海角社区's Office of International Programs, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. It is designed for clinical and medical science students, dental students, nursing students, students in public health, students in health sciences related programs, young physicians, teachers, researchers, and experts in health related fields. The course is offered in both in-person and online formats and includes medicine, dental, nursing and public health tracks. Note that the public health track is currently only available for the in-person format but medicine, dental and nursing tracks are available for both in person and online formats. It provides an interactive and unique format for participants to gain exposure to the Canadian healthcare system, family medicine, clinical medical practices, dentistry curriculum, nursing curriculum and the health sciences program offered at the 海角社区. The program aims to meet the needs of those interested in both clinical and research paths and allows participants to meet health faculty and trainees from various cultural and international backgrounds with similar career goals.

The Global Health Science Program provides:
- An interactive medical course in a unique format
- Medicine, Dental, Nursing and Public Health tracks with laboratory science and other health sciences related tracks being added in the future
- Meaningful exposure to the Canadian health-care system, including hospital, family medicine and clinical medical practices
- An opportunity to meet with renown medical researchers such as 海角社区's Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Michael Houghton
- An opportunity for participants to learn about Canadian society and culture
- An opportunity for participants to meet new friends with different cultural backgrounds

- Clinical medicine & medical science students
- Students in any year of their medical or health sciences program
- Students from Faculties of Medicine & Dentistry, Nursing Faculties and Schools of Public Health from international partners
- Young physicians, teachers, researchers, experts in health related fields
Summer 2026 In-Person Cohort
The next in-person offering of this program is Monday to Friday, July 13 - Aug. 7, 2026, 9 am - 4 pm. Cost is $5,000 CAD and includes course materials, emergency health insurance while in Alberta and shared room in Lister Residence from arrival on Saturday, July 11, 2026 to departure on Saturday, August 8, 2026. If you prefer to find your own accommodations, cost is $4,160 CAD and incudes course materials and emergency health insurance. All participants whether they are staying in residence or not, are asked to provide their arrival and departure information by the payment deadline using . If participants are arriving before July 11 or departing after August 8, and wish to stay at Lister, they must make their own arrangments directly with Lister Residence by contacting them at guest.services@ualberta.ca Guests must pay the additional cost of their room directly to the front desk of Lister upon arrival. Note that check in time at Lister Residence is after 4 pm. The security guard will be alerted if you are arriving after 11 pm and be watching for you to open the door. Check out time is by 11 am on the day of departure.
Letters of invitation with accommpanying payment information will be sent out as soon as registrations are received.
Visa Requirements: Registrants should use their letter of invitation to apply immediately for a Temporary Resident Visa (Visitor Visa) or eTA (whichever applies) to allow for any potential delays in the processing time. To check processing times for your country
Registrants should not pay their tuition fee until they receive their visa. We have 2 payment options:
1. A fee of $5,000 CAD that includes course materials, emergency health insurance and residence. Meals are not included. Deadline for payment if you use this option is June 12, 2026. Lister Residence requires 4 weeks notice if you plan to stay on campus. Once you make the payment there are no refunds after June 12, 2026. This option is best for those who have their visas in hand and wish to stay in residence on campus.
2. A fee of $4,160 CAD that includes course materials and emergency health insurance but no residence or meals. There is no deadline for payment for this option. This option is best for those students who have not received their visas and are unsure if they are able to attend. Once a student is assured they have their visa, they can contact Lister Residence directly at groupbookings@ualberta.ca to see if they have a room at the GHSP preferred rate. If they do not have room, there are many hotels in Edmonton to choose from. It may be possible to stay in a hotel for the first couple of days then book at Lister.
3. A fee of $2,000 CAD for Canadian Citizens/domestic students which includes course materials only (no residence, no emergency health care and no meals). Canadian students must verify their residency by sending a copy of their ID/first page of passport to gmsp@ualberta.ca. Students wishing to stay on campus in Lister can book directly by emailing groupbookings@ualbertra.ca.
Chinese Translation of GHSP In-Person Brochure
Twelve different international educational institutions were represented at the GHSP Summer 2023 Cohort including Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Peking University Health Science Centre, Chongqing Medical University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Jinan University, Alfaisal University and Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine & Health Sciences to name a few. Winter 2026 Online Cohort
The online offering of this 3-week program has been launched and runs from Sunday to Thursday, 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm MST Canada & USA, specific dates to be announced. Cost is $1,500 CAD/person or $50,000 CAD/institution (up to 200 participants/institution) and includes online sessions, course materials and publications through eClass External. Institutional sponsors are asked to contact the GHSP office at gmsp@ualberta.ca to sign up for the institutional rate. Deadline for payment is TBA. Refunds less a $3.5% administration fee are provided until TBA. After this date, no refunds are available.
