SRP 2017

My experiences with WISEST began with the Summer Research Program in 2017. During that summer, I was placed in a chemical engineering research lab where I worked on synthesizing catalysts for water splitting reactions. This was my first introduction to engineering and all the possibilities it could bring for me. Between working in the lab and attending the various events during the SRP, the experiences I had gave me a new sense of belonging and confidence to pursue a future in STEM. This opportunity also allowed me to meet other like-minded people and gain lifelong friends.

Since then, I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Co-op from the 海角社区. During my undergrad, I was part of the leadership teams for the EcoCar and UA-WiSE student groups. EcoCar is an engineering student project team that designs and builds hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to compete in an annual efficiency competition. UA-WiSE is the undergraduate student group associated with WISEST, focused on supporting underrepresented students in STEM fields.

I am now working towards my Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the 海角社区. My master’s is focused on applying risk management techniques to the product development process for mechatronics products.

I have been volunteering with WISEST since the beginning of my undergrad, and it has been such a valuable experience to help show young women and gender-diverse people that they can also have a future in STEM! Without WISEST, I know I wouldn’t have pursued a career in engineering, and I am thankful for the impact that these programs have had on me.
