CHOICES 2009

In 2009, I was selected to attend WISEST’s CHOICES conference at the age of 12 and spent the day exploring science through hands-on activities. I still remember a chemistry experiment where a solution changed colour – it left a lasting impression and sparked my interest in science.

Many years later, I went on to study at the 海角社区, completing a double major in Chemistry and Biological Sciences. After my bachelor’s degree and a year of working as an analytical chemist in a bioanalytical startup, I decided to return to graduate school. I'm now working on my MSc in Analytical Chemistry and using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to develop new methods of studying the human lipidome. With this research I am attempting to create new methods of profiling the human lipidome in order to help lay the foundation for new techniques that could precisely target treatments to where they are needed within the body.

I currently serve as a VP External on the Chemistry Graduate Student’s Society, am the chemistry representative for the Science Graduate Students’ Association Council and am a general member of Working for Inclusivity in Chemistry (WIC). As I always say, I learned to love being busy.

My 12-year-old self never could have imagined how far I’d follow that spark of inspiration. I have since volunteered with WISEST many times throughout my university career – I want to inspire others in the same way that I was inspired all those years ago.
