About Us

The Department of Sociology is among the top-ranked sociology programs in the country and is placed in the top 100 in the world. We train students for a diversity of professions. Our Minor and Major programs provide maximum flexibility with minimal course requirements. Our new course-based Masters degree enables students to earn a higher degree and learn advanced skills within 8 to 12 months.

Approximately 30 percent of Canadians have a university degree – among them, more than 82 per cent are employed, which is higher than the national average. In a recent US study of employers, most indicated that a key determinant in hiring was "a demonstrated capacity to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems." Employers prioritized applicants who were skilled writers and speakers, could apply knowledge in real-world settings, and demonstrated an ability in complex problem solving. Students who pursue sociology degrees later report high job satisfaction. Most indicate that their job relates to their sociology training and that they apply the skills from their degree almost every day in work or community life.
