Our specialty teaching clinic provides affordable periodontal services for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum (periodontal) diseases. Placement of dental implants, as well as treatment of hard and soft tissue problems around teeth and implants, are also in our scope of services. We provide personalized care to give patients the confident smiles they deserve. The graduate students who are part of our graduate periodontics programs are dentists who are training to become periodontal specialists. Our clinic is open to the general public.

What services do we offer?

As part of the graduate student’s learning experience, you have the opportunity to receive the following periodontic treatments:

Gum disease management

Our periodontist graduate students specialize in the soft tissues of the mouth and jawbone and can help you with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum) diseases. This helps maintain a healthy foundation for your teeth.

Repairing and adjusting gums

When advanced gum disease has caused significant tissue loss, graduate students can perform specialized surgical and regenerative therapies to restore tissue. These procedures include tissue grafting to rebuild the gumline and ridge augmentation to rebuild lost bone and gums.

Supporting restorative dentistry

Preparing your gums can help achieve the best possible results from your restorative dental work. We perform crown lengthening and crown exposure to ensure that enough of the tooth is visible for a general dentist/prosthodontist to place a crown or other restorations properly.

Replacing missing teeth (implants)

Regain a complete and natural-looking smile. We offer the placement of dental implants for missing teeth, which also helps to prevent shifting teeth.

Minor surgical procedures

Graduate students can offer a range of minor surgical procedures. This includes esthetic gum recontouring to treat short teeth, gum grafts, frenectomy to correct a tight frenum (the tissue connecting the lip to the gum), and fiberotomy to improve tooth stability after orthodontic treatment.

What should patients expect?

  • Step one: Screening appointment

    30 mins

A representative will call you to schedule a screening appointment. ALL patients requesting implants require a screening appointment. At the appointment, we will review your oral health to determine if you are eligible for the program, and if you are deemed eligible, you will move on to the steps below.

  • Step two: New patient exam and specialty consultations

Two to three appointments | Six to nine hours

Then you will meet your assigned treatment provider (graduate student). They will conduct an oral exam of your mouth. Implant patients will require records including photographs, x-rays, three-dimensional x-ray (CBCT) and a 3D scan of your teeth. Your assigned graduate student, guided by the supervising specialty faculty, will create a customized plan to address your diagnosis. Once a complex treatment plan is determined, you may begin treatment.

  • Step three: Begin treatment

    Three or more hours

You will start your treatment with your assigned graduate student and will have ongoing appointments until your treatment is complete. Due to our learning environment, each appointment is three hours. Patients are expected to attend all appointments necessary for their treatment, and costs will vary depending on diagnosis.
