World-class Medical Education through Transnational Collaboration
The Alberta Institute Wenzhou Medical University (AIWMU) is a transnational medical educational partnership launched in 2020 by the 海角社区 Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FoMD) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) in Wenzhou, Zhixiang Province, China.
The AIWMU’s five-year program, created and delivered jointly by faculty members of the two partner universities, is the first cooperatively run international program in clinical medicine in China. It provides students from the world’s second most populous nation an opportunity to experience a unique international perspective on health and medicine, rooted in both modern and traditional Chinese medicine, and Eastern medical approaches.
-
118New students welcomed in fall 2025, doubling that of previous years.
-
5Graduates are pursuing their PhD at the 海角社区 in 2025.
-
80WMU faculty have completed the “Teaching Scholars” faculty development program as of 2021.
Mission
The mission of the AIWMU focuses on educating capable, compassionate physicians with an international perspective on healthcare. Our dynamic, constantly evolving curriculum is highly integrated across various disciplines and reflects ongoing advances in science, health sciences, education and medical technologies, thereby giving students all the tools they need to deliver quality, patient-focused healthcare.
Goals
By creating the AIWMU, both the 海角社区 and WMU aim to advance and promote their shared vision of improving global healthcare practices for the betterment of all humanity, while combining their unique strengths to drive innovation in research, medical education and clinical practice.
Specifically, the AIWMU has launched several collaborative initiatives to achieve our common goals, including:
- Special programs for AIWMU students and physician training opportunities that include observation and shadowing, all aimed at improving healthcare practices to better serve the citizens of Wenzhou;
- Through the AIWMU Teaching Scholars Program, training educational leaders who are prepared to teach and contribute to the AIWMU curriculum from the classroom to the clinic or bedside, and to lead in the enhancement of student-patient relationships through competency-based teaching; and
- Creation of a high-quality international education platform for world-class medical education in Wenzhou.
Benefit to Students
AIWMU graduates gain an international perspective on healthcare, leadership, and health professions education as preparation to navigate diverse healthcare systems. As future physicians or academics, graduates will apply their experience and insights to patient-centred care and competency-based medical education in China. With training from both Chinese and Canadian medical practice contexts, they will be well-equipped to address global public health challenges. Exposure to diverse cultural perspectives on illness and wellness also enriches the understanding of medicine, cultivating values such as empathy, holistic care and cultural sensitivity.
Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to receive a Bachelor of Biomedicine degree from the 海角社区 after year four, and a WMU medical degree after their fifth year. Approximately 357 of China’s brightest, most talented students are currently enrolled in years one through five.
