Potential Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) labour disruption
3 October 2025
The following message was shared from the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) on Thursday, Oct 2, 2025:
Like many of you, we are closely monitoring the potential Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) strike. The ATA rejected the government’s latest offer on Sept. 29 and announced its plans to strike beginning on Monday, Oct. 6.
This potential labour disruption will create challenges for those with school-aged children. Reiterating our earlier message to you, we strongly encourage supervisors to exercise flexibility and to work with their teams to balance operational requirements with personal circumstances. We ask that supervisors continue to check in regularly with their employees and adjust arrangements as the situation unfolds.
For staff, flexibility could include temporary arrangements such as compressed hours, remote work options, adjusted start/end times, and the use of vacation and/or banked time.
We ask that instructors follow their usual processes for managing absences during this time.
Any faculty and staff impacted by the potential ATA strike should contact their supervisor to determine the best course of action. Given the pending strike date of Oct. 6, we urge you to reach out as soon as possible.
If you require further assistance, please contact your HR Partner.
While we have no way of predicting how long a potential strike may last, we will continue to work closely with each faculty to mitigate disruption to students. A reminder from the Office of the Provost will be sent to all students later today, reiterating the support available to those who may be affected by the strike. We will continue to share information as it becomes available.
Sincerely,
Verna Yiu
Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
Todd Gilchrist
Vice-President (University Services, Operations and Finance)
