Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to meet minimum academic entrance requirements. There are more applicants to the Faculty of Education than there are places, and enrolment management is in effect for all undergraduate degree programs. Under enrolment management, an overall target for the Faculty is set each year. The number of new students admitted to any particular program or year of a program may vary depending on the number of available places and the continuing students' promotion, departure, or graduation. While the minimum admission average is 70% for high school applicants and a minimum GPA of 2.0 for postsecondary applicants, all admissions are competitive, and the actual admission averages may be higher than the minimum. Visit for historical competitive average ranges.

High School (Direct-Entry) Applicants

High school applicants will be considered for admission based on the average of five subjects noted below:

Subject Requirements

  1. English Language Arts 30-1
  2. Three subjects from Group A and/or C (see the Admissions Chart).
  3. One additional subject from Group A, B, or C. Beginning for the Fall 2020 intake: Physical Education 30 (5 credits) or 30-level CTS (5 credits).

Considerations

  1. Although not required for admission, it is strongly recommended that students entering Elementary Education possess Math 30-1 or Math 30-2 in order to meet the prerequisites for courses within the program.
  2. Please note that for some Secondary Education Major/Minor routes, students are required to present specific 30-level courses (or equivalent) in order to complete the requirements of each Major/Minor. These courses do not have to be presented for admission but are prerequisites for university course registration.
  3. The Faculty of Education accepts proficiency in an Aboriginal language recognized in Canada (e.g., Cree, Slavey, etc.) to meet a Group A admission requirement. Proficiency is measured either by a test, administered by the University if such can be arranged, or by boards of examiners appointed by the University. Candidates having passed the required test of an Aboriginal language have their averages calculated on the remaining four matriculation subjects.
  4. Applicants who do not present the high school requirements or the required admission average may be considered for admission if they successfully complete at an accredited post-secondary institution *24 credits or more (to a maximum of 60) of coursework transferable to the BEd program.
  5. All students are required to demonstrate English Language Proficiency and Spoken English Proficiency in addition to meeting the admission requirements for their program of choice.

Please review the Application Documents page for additional requirements.

High School Applicants With Less Than 24 Credits

If you have completed fewer than 9 credits of transferable post-secondary coursework you will apply as an Admission from High School.

If you have completed 9 to 22.5 credits of transferable post-secondary coursework (typically 3-7 courses), you will need a competitive average in all post-secondary courses and a minimum 70% average in:

  1. English Language Arts 30-1
  2. Three subjects from Group A and/or C (see the Admissions Chart).
  3. One additional subject from Group A, B, or C.
For direct-entry applicants only, beginning for the Fall 2020 intake: Physical Education 30 (5 credits), or 30-level CTS (5 credits) may be used in place of a Group B course.

If you are 21 years of age or older and have completed 9 to 22.5 credits of transferable post-secondary coursework, you will need a competitive average in all post-secondary courses and a minimum 70% average in:

  1. English Language Arts 30-1
  2. One subject from Group A, B, or C.

If you have 24 credits or more you will apply as a Transfer Student.

Please review the Application Documents page for additional requirements.

Mature (Non-Matriculated) Applicants

To be considered for admission as a non-matriculated applicant, a student must be 21 years of age or older by September 1st of the year in which admission is sought.

Requirements

Non-matriculated applicants with no previous transferable post-secondary coursework (or less than 9*) will be considered for admission based on a competitive average in:
  1. English 30-1
  2. 1 subject from group A, B, or C (see the Admissions Chart).
Non-matriculated applicants who have completed between 9 and 22.5 credits of transferable post-secondary coursework will be considered for admission based on the following:
  1. English 30-
  2. A minimum 70% average in 1 subject from group A, B, or C.
A competitive average on all transferable post-secondary coursework completed.

Any applicant who has successfully completed 24 credits or more at the post-secondary level will be considered as a transfer applicant, regardless of age.

Please review the Application Documents page for additional requirements.

Transfer Applicants

General Requirements

  1. Transfer students must present the successful completion of at least 24 credits transferable course weight. Students with less than 24 will be assessed based on a combination of high school and post-secondary coursework. Applicants who present less than 9 credits of transferable post-secondary coursework are considered as High School Applicants.
  2. Satisfactory standing in the Faculty or post-secondary institution from which they wish to transfer;
  3. An Admission Grade Point Average (AGPA) of at least 2.0, as well as a competitive AGPA.

Considerations

  1. Applicants are ranked according to their AGPA, which is calculated on all university transferable coursework completed in the most recent two terms of study if they contain a minimum of 24 credits. If those two terms contain less than 24 credits, all work in the next most recent term(s) is included in the calculation until the minimum total of 24 credits is reached.
  2. All students are required to demonstrate English Language Proficiency and Spoken English Proficiency in addition to meeting the admission requirements for their program of choice.

Information for Indigenous Applicants

The Faculty of Education encourages Indigenous students’ study toward the Bachelor of Education degree. The Faculty recognizes that Indigenous applicants (including status and non-status Indians, Inuit, and Métis) have traditionally been under-represented in teaching. To assist more Indigenous students to achieve education degrees, the Admissions Committee will consider additional qualified applicants over and above the Indigenous students who may be admitted in the regular competition for places in the Faculty. Until the Indigenous enrolment of the Faculty reaches 10% of total enrolment, up to 5% of admissions to the Faculty will be allocated to Indigenous applicants. Indigenous students who wish to be considered for these places must attain the minimum admission requirements of their chosen route.

Definition of an Indigenous Applicant

For the purpose of application and admission to the 海角社区, and consistent with the Constitution Act, 1982, Part II, Section 35(2), an Indigenous applicant is an Indian, Inuit, or Métis person of Canada.

Formal Documentation of Indigeneity

Indigenous applicants who wish to be considered for admissions, awards, and financial support reserved for Indigenous students will be required to provide documentation of Canadian Indigeneity. Documentation will be verified by one of

  • The Faculty to which the student is applying for admission that is reserved for Indigenous students.
  • The Office of the Registrar, for the purpose of scholarships, awards, and financial support dedicated to Indigenous peoples.

A list of the formal documentation of Indigeneity that students/applicants will need to present is prepared annually by the Committee on the Documentation of Indigeneity (CDI) and can be found on the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Awards website. Students who have questions regarding these documents are encouraged to contact their Faculty or the Office of the Registrar.

Indigenous applicants must be aware that providing documentation of Indigeneity does not guarantee admission to any program. All positions at the University are competitive, and admission committees will make their selections from among the best-qualified candidates. Candidates may also be required to demonstrate their connection to an Indigenous community.

Residence Requirements

The 海角社区 is committed to admitting highly qualified students from Alberta, Canada and the international community. To meet the needs of the community the University serves, some Faculties have established program enrolment targets regarding the citizenship and residence of undergraduate students.

Regarding Application:

Residence regulations affecting application to any program at this University shall be waived for Indigenous applicants.

Regarding Admission:

For the purpose of determining admission to a program, an Indigenous applicant who is not a resident of Alberta will be considered in the following categories and in the order specified:

  1. First, as a candidate for the positions reserved for out-of-province applicants.
  2. Second, as a candidate for the positions reserved for Alberta residents. Residence regulations shall be waived for this purpose.
  3. Third, as a candidate for positions set aside specifically for Indigenous applicants. Preference for these positions may be given to those who are residents of Alberta.
