Leadership programs are offered in all levels according to an employee’s level of authority.

Courses Offered

Leading with Influence

This program recognizes the critical work done by informal leaders all over campus and provides support for faculty and staff engaged in this form of leadership.

Eligibility: Leading with Influence is open to all faculty and staff. It is specifically designed to assist faculty and staff members who seek to be a force for positive change and build leadership skills in their current role.

Cost: Participation in Leading with Influence is free for º£½ÇÉçÇø employees.

Leading Others

This training draws on current research and best practices in the field of leadership and helps supervisors understand themselves as leaders, develop relationships with others, navigate complex contexts and reach for future possibilities. This is an eight-day, cohort-based program.

Eligibility: Leading Others is designed for º£½ÇÉçÇø employees who supervise a team.

Cost: Participation in Leading Others is free for supervisors.

UAcademy

UAcademy is an internal leadership training program for º£½ÇÉçÇø senior leaders. The content, instruction and evaluation of UAcademy will align with the university’s Indigenous Strategic Plan, with incorporation of the new University Strategic Plan.

  • An executive education program for senior leaders across campus
  • Offered by the Office of the Provost and Alberta School of Business
  • Nomination: by supervisors
  • Duration:
    • ~157-165 hours, including 14 days of in-person delivery
    • 5 modules
  • Includes executive coaching support
Cost: Participants will not pay any out-of-pocket expenses unless required by their nominating area, and this would be limited to travel-related requirements as there is no fee for the program itself.

5. Executive Coaching Details

  • Offered through the FoMD Leadership Development course.
  • Provided by Shana Ross, executive coach recruited as a consultant
  • Current status: Services not at full capacity; offered on a targeted mentorship basis rather than a formal coaching program.
  • Access may be available informally through programs such as Helping Hands Program, faculty development, or personal connections.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) Medical Leadership Development

Physician Diversity, Wellness and Development (Physician Experience, Provincial Medical Affairs AHS)

The Physician Diversity, Wellness and Development team offers in-person (and virtual) training opportunities in Trauma Informed Leadership (CME accredited), Trauma Aware Culture Training (TACT), Trauma-informed Protective Strategies (TIPS), burnout prevention, and physician suicide awareness.

Virtual Medical Leadership Development Series – hosted by Dr. Curtis Johnston

Monthly CME-accredited virtual seminars (1.5 hours) on topics related to medical leadership processes and knowledge. Each session is focused on one or two related topics with speakers, and time for discussion or small break away groups.

Process: Sessions are open to all medical leaders.

Harvard ManageMentor (Access through AHS)

Harvard ManageMentor (HMM) is open to everyone at AHS. Contains resources for leaders to stay on top of the latest thinking and proven practices from Harvard Business Review through bite-sized, on-demand videos, articles and modules.

Process: Current employees of an Alberta provincial health agency can self-register.

Cost: Access to Harvard ManageMentor is available free of charge to all employees of an Alberta provincial health agency.

MLL hosts instructor-led and online eLearning courses developed by AHS stakeholders. Offers a number of leadership development related offerings in their course catalogue that is continuously expanding.

Canadian Medical Association

Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Fundamentals

Free and accredited, self-study learning, including: 

  • Leadership Essentials Learning Series: Focused on helping you develop skills to influence, engage and communicate with the members of your health-care
    team.
  • Early Career Learning Series: Help to increase awareness and competency in key areas that are crucial to your success as a physician. Current topics include, “Finding Meaning and Purpose in Medicine”, “Relationship Tips for Busy Docs”, “Influencing Up for Early Career Physicians”.

Canadian Medical Association Joule Physician Leadership Institute (PLI) Courses

The CMA is currently redesigning their physician leadership program. During this time, there are no open enrollment PLI courses being offered, and a smaller selection of courses are available for booking. Zones and Departments may choose to offer and fund courses currently available.

Courses of interest include:

  • Building and leading teams
  • Influence and advocacy
  • Polarity management: adaptive leadership for competing priorities
  • Social systems leadership: Thriving in complexity

This advanced certificate is designed for professionals at mid-level management or emerging leaders.

Program Length

  • 6 courses
  • 21 hours per course
  • Online and flexible
  • Certificate in as little as one year

Individual courses are also available separately

Eligibility: This program is designed for professionals in supervisory, mid-level management, and emerging leadership positions in a wide range of employment sectors, including private, governmental, and educational.

Cost: $5,200 CAD effective Fall 2025 (price may vary and is dependent on the electives chosen)

º£½ÇÉçÇø Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) Programs

1. Dare to Lead Course

Based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown, this program is available to anyone looking to step out with greater courage in their professional and personal life.

This program is eligible for:

  • Human Resource Development Fund (HRDF): Professional development funding available to º£½ÇÉçÇø support staff
  • reimbursement under Quality Improvement Cost on the Application form.
  • : This curriculum meets the criteria for which the grant covers 2/3 the cost of the training.
  • Time: Begins October 7, 2025 and continues weekly until November 25, 2025 I 4:30 to 7:00 pm MT I Via Zoom (I would not include dates or you will be updating this yearly or whenever the next course is)
Cost: $1,850

2. Crucial Conversations

Crucial Conversations is available to anyone who is interested in learning how to speak and be heard (and encouraging others to do the same). In this program, you will learn how to surface the best ideas, make the highest-quality decisions, and then act on your decisions with unity and commitment.

After the live, online, 12-hour course, you will be able to:

  • Resolve conflict.
  • Speak your mind truthfully and tactfully.
  • Reach alignment when stakes are high and opinions vary.
  • Navigate the most important interactions at home and work.
