UNIX/Linux

In order to print to a public printer in the Department you will need to use the campus VPN if it is not on a research wired network.

This page describes how to set up your Linux/Unix system to use the Department printers.

Notes

If you are not on a research wired network you will need to authenticate with the campus VPN first using @cs as your login ID.

Set up a new printer

  • Install the driver for your Linux from the Xerox downloads page.  This page provides both RPM and DEB packages.  (If your system can not use either of these you could select Generic Postscript for the printer type instead but you will only have basic printing functionality.)
  • Navigate to the Add Printers function for your flavour of Linux.
  • Add a new TCP/IP printer using the HP JetDirect protocol (raw port 9100) using the IP address for the printer you want to add as per the printers page
  • Choose the Xerox Altalink B8255 driver
  • You should be able to print.
  • Please try a test page to make sure printing is working properly before sending any new jobs.
Please contact Helpdesk if you have any problems and include the following information: error message/situation, printer name, machine name, and the fact that you are printing from Linux.
