Non-Profit Board Internship Program
The Non-Profit Board Internship (NPBI) Program is a great way for students to learn how boards operate, to develop leadership and decision-making skills, and to get engaged in their communities. NPBI pairs each student with a non-profit board and mentor in the Edmonton community for the academic year.
This program is organized in collaboration with the Career Centre. This internship meets the non-credit opportunity requirement for the Certificate in Community Engagement and Service-Learning.
NPBI Program Information
This unpaid internship consists of three components that will require 50-60 hours in total over the course of eight months from September to April.
- A series of online workshops and in-person events: Workshops are delivered in collaboration with the , workshops provide training and discussion of key aspects of non-profit boards. Topics include: financial responsibilities, organization purpose and planning, building strong teams, and more. The in-person events include the program launch, the intern check-in and the graduation event (15 hours)
- A board placement: Guided by volunteer mentors from each host board, the board placement affords interns the opportunity to attend and participate at board meetings using their newly acquired skills (20 hours)
- A project to support board governance: To qualify for a NPBI Certificate, interns contribute a final project to their board, which they design and complete with the guidance of their mentors (20 hours)

ELIGIBILITY
All registered 海角社区 undergraduate and graduate students, both full-time and part-time, are welcome to apply. Students should have successfully completed 2 years of post-secondary education by the internship start date and be enrolled in classes for the duration of the program.
Student applications will require the following:
- An updated resume
- Contact information for two references
- A 500-word personal essay addressing why you want to participate in this program, the skills and attributes you will bring to a non-profit board, and what you hope to achieve through this program and how this relates to your future goals
Successful applicants will then be matched with a non-profit board based on their availability, preferences, skills, and the needs of the board.
APPLICATION FORMS
Student/intern applications for the 2026-2027 internship will open in March 2026 and close mid-April 2026.
Board/mentor applications for the 2026-2027 internship will open in late-May 2026 and close in late-June 2026.
