What is the role of OSDHR?

  • OSDHR provides a safe, neutral and confidential space for current members of the 海角社区 community to disclose concerns about any potential misconduct or wrongdoing.
  • OSDHR provides advice and referrals to those disclosing, so that they may understand the options available to them.
  • OSDHR offers workshops and presentations about human rights related topics. Learn more about these workshops »

What is not the role of OSDHR?

  • OSDHR does not receive formal complaints, as our office mandate is to provide a safe, neutral and confidential space for disclosures.
  • OSDHR does not investigate misconduct or wrongdoing.
  • OSDHR does not make decisions nor implement sanctions regarding reported misconduct or wrongdoing.
  • OSDHR cannot provide advice on concerns or policies/procedures that are external and not connected to the 海角社区’s work, learning or living environment.

Can I meet with OSDHR if I have questions about a formal complaints process?

  • Yes. OSDHR does not accept formal complaints, however, we can provide advice about the formal complaint processes available.

To whom can OSDHR provide advice and referrals?

  • OSDHR can provide advice and referrals to current faculty, staff and students of the 海角社区. OSDHR will assess on a case-by-case basis whether they can provide advice to individuals external to the community when the concerns relate to the university.

Where can I go if I am not a current 海角社区 faculty, staff, or student?

  • The may be more appropriate as the commission is responsible for carrying out work under the Alberta Human Rights Act, including protecting human rights.

What can I expect from a meeting with OSDHR?

  • All meetings are made via appointment, i.e., no walk-ins. Meetings can be virtual, over the phone, or in person.
  • During the meeting, a staff member will explain the role of OSDHR and the scope of confidentiality. As the discloser, you will guide the meeting and volunteer information that you feel is necessary about your experience. Then, OSDHR will explore the options available with you and refer you to the appropriate on-campus or community service, if applicable.
  • As the discloser, you are the decision maker. Hence it is entirely up to you whether or not you follow through with any of the options available.

What does confidentiality look like at OSDHR?

  • OSDHR upholds a high standard of confidentiality throughout the disclosure process.
  • Confidentiality may be broken in the event that there is a:
    • risk of harm to self;
    • risk of harm to others;
    • harm or exploitation of a child/minor; or,
    • a legal process.
