Oculoplastic, Ocular and Orbital Oncology Research Fellowship
Supervisors: Dr. Kelsey A Roelofs and Dr. Ezekiel Weis
Fellowship Overview: The Oculoplastics, Orbit and Ocular Oncology Research
Fellowship is a comprehensive 12-month, full time program designed for medical
students, residents or fellows eager to cultivate their expertise in clinical research.
The fellowship experience will be tailored to the individual applicant’s skills, interests
and goals. Active areas of research within our group include ocular oncology,
artificial intelligence, patient reported outcomes, oculoplastics and orbital oncology,
multi-centered projects and big data. The fellow will be involved in enrolling patients
in studies, carrying out prospective and retrospective data collection and building
upon already existing databases to facilitate the long-term scientific goals of the
research group. Throughout the year, fellows will receive mentorship to further
develop skills in scientific reasoning, research methodology, study design, outcomes
analysis and manuscript writing. Fellows will also be encouraged and supported to
present their work at local, national and international conferences.
Formal training objectives:
This research fellowship is designed for medical graduates who have recently
completed their MD and are pursuing advanced academic and clinical exposure in
ocular oncology and oculoplastic surgery.
The fellowship emphasizes the development of scholarly, professional, and
collaborative skills consistent with the CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework.
Fellowship Logistics
Locations: Clinical activities and research will be performed at two hospital sites,
one in Edmonton (Royal Alexandra Hospital) and one in Calgary (Rockyview General
Hospital). In addition to this, research will also be conducted at community clinics.
Although the successful applicant will be based primarily in one city, either Calgary
or Edmonton, occasional travel to all sites will be required. The fellow will be
responsible for costs associated with travel.
Resources: The fellow will be provided with a list of required courses that need to be
completed to handle patient data and recruit patients. They will be provided an
office/touch down space in all areas where in person research activities are
expected to take place. Any resources required on a case-by-case base for a specific
project will be provided by the supervisors.
Expectations surrounding academic productivity: To participate in and lead several
studies throughout the years, with the goal of submitting 5 manuscripts for peer
reviewed publication by the completion of the fellowship. Fellows will also be
expected to submit their research for presentation at local, national, and
international conferences.
Evaluation: The fellow's progress will be subject to thorough evaluation, and
successful completion of the fellowship necessitates achieving a satisfactory grade.
This evaluation process comprises both formal interim and final assessments.
Throughout the year, ongoing project assessments will take place, with the
expectation that the fellow demonstrates steady and reasonable progress. We
actively encourage fellows to offer feedback and share their insights regarding the
fellowship's evolution, ensuring an environment of open communication and
continuous improvement.
