Indigenous Applicants Dental Assisting

Applying to Dental Assisting

Indigenous applicants apply through the general Dental Assisting application process.

Please take a moment to review the Dental Assisting website. If you have any questions specifically about the program/program requirements reach out to the Dentistry program directly at admissions@dentistry.ualberta.ca or 780-492-1319.

Within the application where you have the ability to identify as Indigenous and this will automatically flag you for the Indigenous Stream. If you meet the minimum requirements for the Indigenous stream, you will be invited to both our MMI (Multiple Mini Interviews) and Indigenous Stream interview.

Indigenous Stream Interviews

Our office (WIHP) focuses on the Indigenous Stream interviews, while the Dentistry program handles the MMI interviews. We host an informal, conversational style interview with applicants and a panel of Indigenous interviewers. The panel is usually made up of one WIHP team member, a current Indigenous student, a faculty member, and community member. Here we get an understanding of your pathway to medicine and how our program can best support you as you move forward into the program. From there, the panelists submit their comments on who is recommended to join the program through Wapanachakos, and who is recommended to join the general stream.

GPA for Indigenous Applicants

All Indigenous applicants follow the minimum grade averages for high school applicants to be accepted into the interviews. This is a minimum of 65% in each of the following high school subjects:

  • English Language Arts 30-1 0r 30-2

Two of the following:

  • Biology 30
  • Chemistry 30
  • Science 30

One of the following:

  • Math 30-1
  • Math 30-2
  • Pure Math 30
  • Applied Math 30

*High school courses can be substituted if an applicant has the post-secondary equivalent, with a grade of C+ or above. The eligible courses are:

  • English or writing (3 units)
  • Biology (3 units)
  • Chemistry (3 units)
  • Any science (3 units)
  • Mathematics or statistics (3 units)

If you are well far and beyond these requirements, that is excellent but you do not need to have a competitive average as you would going into the general admissions process.
