About

Thanks to a substantial endowment from Sandy and Cecil Mactaggart, The China Institute at the 海角社区 is Canada's largest independent hub dedicated to deepening understanding of China and charting informed, productive pathways for Canada–China relations amid rapid global change.

At the confluence of policy research and scholarship, we integrate academic inquiry with actionable policy analysis to examine China’s impact on key global issues—climate, energy, food security, and health—as well as address broader strategic challenges.

As the custodian of Canada’s Track 2 diplomacy with China, we foster candid, high-level exchanges that complement official diplomacy. We also train government officials, provide expert policy advice, and support the 海角社区’s academic community through an active and substantial research grant program for faculty and students.

Our independence allows us to contribute non-partisan insights that deepen Canada’s understanding of China’s role in Canada and globally, and seek to advance efforts to improve the global commons through our research.
