HREC Research Grants 2026
The (HREC) announces its 2026 Research Grants Competition.
The HREC Research Grants Competition is intended to expand knowledge and understanding of the Holodomor through support of academic research on the Holodomor, the publication of research results, the preservation of materials, and the organization of and participation in academic venues.
Examples of research that could be supported include the policies of foreign governments during collectivization and the Holodomor; the Holodomor at the national and sub-national levels (eg., oblasts, raions, villages); and the Holodomor and its impact on various groups and communities, including women, children, minorities, and those with disabilities.
Grants to individuals will not exceed C$7,500.00, with most grants ranging from C$1,500.00 to C$3,500.00 in the past years. HREC also encourages proposals for larger collaborative projects that engage scholars and institutions from both in and outside Ukraine.
A new feature of this year's competition will see successful applicants paired with scholars who will serve as research advisors. In addition, selected grantees will be invited to submit their research for publication to maximize its reach.
This year's competition is being held with the support of Global Affairs Canada as part of the project Support to Ukraine’s National Museum of the Holodomor Genocide,” carried out by Cowater International in partnership with the Canada Ukraine Foundation. A key component of the project is to support the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide to gather high quality research on the Holodomor.
Applicants are required to submit via the CIUS awards portal:
1. C.V. (including list of published works, if any)
2. Proposal (2-3 double-spaced pages), outlining purpose, methods and significance of
the proposed project. The proposal should address the existing literature on the topic
and how the project will add to our knowledge.
3. Budget outlining how proposed funding will be used.
4. Letter of recommendation, preferably from academic supervisor or head of
department.
