This September, the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Jasmin Peskoller, Visiting Scholar from the . Her month-long residency was defined by a dynamic blend of academic collaboration, teaching engagement, and meaningful outreach beyond the university campus.

Academic Engagement at the 海角社区

During her time on campus, Dr. Peskoller attended lectures across disciplines and took part in discussions with colleagues on subjects ranging from multilingualism and intercultural education to Indigenous perspectives and inclusive teaching practices.

She brought her expertise directly into the classroom with two guest sessions in Professor Xavier Gutiérrez’s course on Spanish language teaching and learning. Focusing on culture and interculturality in the language classroom, Dr. Peskoller challenged students to reflect critically on the role of diversity in education and to question fixed assumptions in language teaching.

A highlight of her visit was the public lecture that opened the Modern Languages and Cultural Studies lecture series, where she presented her forthcoming book The Balancing Act of Diversity, published with Multilingual Matters. The event attracted about forty faculty members, students, and educators. A lively discussion followed and continued into an informal reception, fostering valuable exchange across disciplines and perspectives.

In addition, Dr. Peskoller participated in institute and campus activities, including the Opening Celebrations with the Wirth Institute’s new director, Professor Dominique Reill, and the Central European Café series, where she met with students and faculty to explore shared interests and future opportunities for collaboration.

Engagement Beyond Campus

Dr. Peskoller also took the opportunity to connect with the local school community. At Strathcona High School, she observed classes, joined the principal’s lunch, and participated in an anti-racism conference. She spoke with teachers, administrators, and student support staff, gaining insights into the everyday realities of Alberta’s classrooms while sharing her experiences as a teacher and teacher educator in the Austrian education system, complemented by perspectives from other international contexts.

Building Connections

Dr. Peskoller’s visit was characterized by openness, dialogue, and a strong commitment to exchange. Her presence enriched both the academic and broader community, offering fresh perspectives and fostering meaningful connections that will continue beyond her time in Edmonton.

The Wirth Institute is deeply grateful for her contributions and looks forward to ongoing collaboration with the University of Innsbruck. Visits such as this underscore the value of international partnerships in strengthening research, teaching, and community engagement across borders.
