Epilepsy and EEG Fellowship

Overview

Applications are now being accepted for the Pediatric Epilepsy and EEG Fellowship. This program is affiliated with the Stollery Children’s Hospital, a recognized center of excellence in pediatric epilepsy care, epilepsy surgery, and neurophysiology. Participants in the fellowship will receive comprehensive subspecialty training in the diagnosis and management of pediatric epilepsy, including advanced EEG interpretation, surgical planning, and exposure to the full spectrum of therapeutic options. The fellowship offers either a 12-month or 24-month training program (length negotiable).

Fellows will gain extensive hands-on experience in:

  • Reading and reporting scalp electroencephalography (EEG) for all pediatric and neonatal patients, including routine and prolonged video EEG.
  • Planning invasive monitoring procedures (e.g., stereo EEG, stimulation studies, thermocoagulation, laser interstitial thermal therapy).
  • Interpreting EEG in critical care settings (NICU, CPICU, PICU), including spot vs. prolonged EEG, with emphasis on neonatal neurophysiology.
  • Managing patients admitted for epilepsy telemetry.
  • Participating in specialized epilepsy clinics, including female adolescent multidisciplinary clinic, refractory epilepsy clinic, ketogenic/VNS clinic, and general epilepsy clinics.
  • Presenting and contributing to weekly multidisciplinary seizure conferences for complex surgical cases.
  • Programming and adjusting vagal nerve stimulators (VNS) and responsive neurostimulation (RNS) devices.
  • Initiating and monitoring the ketogenic diet.
  • Leading weekly EEG rounds with epileptologists, residents, and EEG technologists, incorporating case-based teaching.
  • Developing and delivering didactic epilepsy teaching sessions at undergraduate (UGME) and postgraduate (PGME) levels.
  • Completing a two-month epilepsy and EEG rotation in adult epilepsy.

Research opportunities are available and encouraged, with support for presentations at national and international conferences.

Curriculum

The fellowship curriculum is designed to provide a broad and deep foundation in pediatric epilepsy, aligned with best practice guidelines from leading epilepsy organizations. Fellows will acquire advanced skills in EEG interpretation, multidisciplinary surgical planning, epilepsy therapeutics, and academic teaching. Competency will be assessed through clinical performance, case presentations, teaching contributions, and scholarly activity. Fellows will be encouraged to challenge the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology (CSCN) EEG examination that is administered annually.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must hold Royal College certification in Pediatric Neurology or an equivalent qualification.

Funding

Qualified candidates are eligible for one year of fellowship funding, in addition to conference and travel support.
