Unauthorized Video Downloads

With the passage of the Copyright Modernization Act in 2012, a Notice and Notice regime was introduced into Canadian law. Unauthorized Online Use of Images

There is an abundance of images freely available online that are easy to reproduce and reuse. It is important to recognize, however, that these images may be subject to copyright protection.

There are organizations like and that work on behalf of rights holders to seek out unauthorized use of images online. As part of their licensing compliance services, these organizations contact individuals by email with a request for proof of a licence (or other authorization) to use a specific image; and, where there is no licence or authorization, there is a directive to take down the image and provide payment for the unauthorized use.

In light of these growing efforts toward the enforcement of copyright in images used online, it is important to take steps to ensure that your online use of images is appropriate. This includes confirming the terms of use for any image you find online, and it might mean choosing openly licensed images or obtaining permission from the rights holder. (Note that simply providing attribution does not by itself mean the use is not infringing). Please see our Using Images page for more information.
