MECE looks ahead: new programs, courses and research
11 August 2025
The Department of Mechanical Engineering (MECE) is excited to launch a dynamic year ahead, with new programs, innovative courses and research initiatives that reflect our commitment to preparing students for rapidly evolving industries and global challenges.
Welcoming the first MCTR cohort
This fall, MECE will welcome the first cohort of students into the new Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering Co-op (MCTR) program. This forward-looking program combines mechanical systems, electronics and intelligent control, equipping students with the interdisciplinary skills needed to drive innovation in emerging fields such as automation, robotics and smart manufacturing. The program is operated in joint partnership with ECE.
New graduate courses in Advanced Manufacturing
MECE is also proud to launch two advanced graduate courses that expand opportunities for students to build industry-relevant expertise in rapidly growing fields:
- MEC E 665 (instructor: Mostafa Yakout) will be the first additive manufacturing (AM) course offered in the Faculty of Engineering. This course provides graduate students with in-depth knowledge of advanced topics in the AM of metals and ceramics, including laser-material interactions, process-structure-property relationships and the multiphysics nature of AM processes.
- MECE 661 (instructor: Mahdi Hamidi) explores cutting-edge nanomanufacturing and nanocharacterization techniques, giving students the skills needed to design advanced nanomaterials and nanoarchitectures for next-generation applications.
Strengthening research and innovation
MECE researchers are also helping to launch CARDD-Tech, a new research centre in the Faculty of Engineering that focuses on applied research programs to strengthen Canada’s defence capabilities. This initiative will grow Alberta’s presence in national innovation networks while providing immersive, mission-driven graduate training opportunities for students who want to contribute to meaningful, high-impact projects.
Upcoming seminars and events
This year, MECE is pleased to host a range of guest speakers who will share insights into emerging technologies and sustainability:
- July 23, 12–1 p.m.: Daya Pandey, University of Leeds — Valorisation of agricultural waste for energy and nutrient recovery.
- September 26, 12–1 p.m.: Amin Paykani, Queen Mary University of London — Sustainable Propulsion Systems.
These events create valuable opportunities for students and faculty to connect with global experts and spark new ideas for research and collaboration.
Looking Ahead
As we head into the new academic year, MECE remains dedicated to providing innovative programs, cutting-edge research, and an inclusive, supportive community for students, faculty and partners. Here’s to a year of discovery, growth and engineering impact!
