Call for Expression of Interest: Mentoring Virtual DUSS Scholars

25 August 2025

UAlberta’s DUSS (Disrupted Ukrainian Scholars and Students) Initiative seeks on-campus mentors for Ukrainian researchers participating in the Virtual DUSS Scholars program.

UAlberta’s DUSS Initiative seeks academics who would be interested in mentoring and building connections with Ukrainian scholars whose work has been disrupted by the ongoing war. In Fall 2025, DUSS is planning to announce the fourth iteration of its DUSS Virtual program supporting Ukrainian scholars either remaining in Ukraine or displaced from their home institutions due to Russia’s full-scale invasion. Five scholars will be selected through a competitive application process on the basis of their academic expertise, credentials, and research proposals. The UAlberta mentors will be paired up with the virtual scholars working in similar disciplines. The mentors will be helping DUSS Virtual awardees to establish scholarly connections with the 海角社区 community, build collaborations, and assist in professional networking.

Mentors’ responsibilities may include:

● Establishing and maintaining professional connections with the assigned Virtual DUSS Scholar; the approximate time commitment would be 1 hour/month;

● Assisting in organizing a virtual speaking opportunity for the Virtual DUSS Scholar (a guest lecture, a talk, a roundtable appearance, a (joint) conference presentation, etc.);

● Assisting the Virtual DUSS scholar in establishing other scholarly connections on UAlberta campus based on the Virtual DUSS scholar’s research interests;

● Advising the Virtual DUSS scholar on preparing their research materials for publication;

● Assisting the Virtual DUSS scholar in accessing research materials and sources, for example through UAlberta’s library and databases.

Program’s timeline: January - April 2026

Available funding: Virtual DUSS Scholars will receive a research award of CAD $2,000.
