On Wednesday, 1 October 2025, the administration of the 海角社区's Saint-Jean Campus was informed that an act of vandalism had been committed on the statue of Brother Antoine, located in the Campus gardens. Orange paint had been poured over the monument.

As soon as the incident was discovered, 海角社区 Protective (UAPS) Services was notified and immediately launched an investigation. At the same time, facilities and maintenance crews were dispatched to the scene to assess the damage and clean up.

Campus Saint-Jean takes this act of vandalism very seriously. As the investigation is ongoing, we cannot share any further information at this time so as not to interfere with the process. No other property damage was reported on campus.

This event comes at a time when dialogue about history, memory and symbols is more important than ever. It reminds us of the complex history of our institution, founded and long administered by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a congregation that played a central role in the administration of residential schools in Canada. The fact that this incident occurred during the observance of National Day of Truth and Reconciliation highlights the painful contrast between our past and our present commitment to confronting this difficult legacy, particularly in the context of the truth, reconciliation and indigenisation process initiated by the Campus Saint-Jean community.

In light of the recurrence of such acts, it is essential to reflect deeply on the contextualisation and preservation of historical elements. Campus Saint-Jean reiterates its commitment to fostering constructive and respectful dialogue on these issues, in collaboration with members of our community, including students, staff, faculty and Indigenous partners.
