Get to know...Tyler Lockyer
This month, we're excited to highlight Tyler Lockyer, Student Commons Lead at the Alberta School of Business. We learn about his favourite travel destination, hobbies and his best advice for new colleagues!
What’s a fun fact about you that most people wouldn’t know?
I am an avid music listener. I am always constantly searching for new music and I have slowly started to build a collection of playlists of music for different events, moods and times of year. I eventually want to transition it to physical collections of music: vinyl or CD's. If you ever want to share your current go-to playlist or some of your favorite artists and albums, I would be delighted!
What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend or day off?
Firstly, it is nice to wake up early and enjoy a full breakfast. In the afternoon, I want to spend time doing an activity with the important people in my life. In the evening, I would ideally make a BBQ dinner and watch the sunset from the back deck of my place. To end the night, I might grab some movie theatre popcorn and watch a movie to cap off the day.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Ireland! It is where my family originates from and it would be an awesome experience to get more acquainted with my familial roots. Plus Ireland is the closest dialect to people from Newfoundland so it would be interesting to apply my accent there and see the type of reaction I would get back.
What’s a hobby or skill you’ve recently picked up (or would like to try)?
I picked up tennis last year with some friends, and I have been having an absolute blast with it. I am finally getting my overhand serves consistent. Another hobby I would like to pick up is woodworking. I love the smell of freshly cut lumber, and building something from scratch is very satisfying work.
What’s a book, movie, or TV show you’re currently enjoying?
I just finished watching the series Severance, and I thought it was great. I’m looking forward to season three. As for movies, I’ve been on a recent kick of Tom Hardy films, with the most recent one being Mad Max: Fury Road. On the book front, I recently started reading The Witcher series, which has been fun since it shows where the games originated!
Do you have a favorite meal or go-to comfort food?
I love a well-put-together sandwich: brioche bread, lightly toasted; some fresh habanero jack cheese; smoked ham; lettuce; tomato; a few crispy strips of bacon; and pickles. To top it off, I add some spicy aioli.
What inspires or motivates you the most in your day-to-day life?
It is my family history and the legacy they leave in their day-to-day lives. Everywhere my family has worked, they are remembered either as the heart of a working group or as the steady hand that led others through tough times. I want to live up to that legacy and ensure I bring positive energy to my everyday life and community, while also putting pride into anything I work on or put my mind to.
Can you share a bit about your role and what brought you to the Alberta School of Business?
I am the Student Commons Lead, tasked with managing our wonderful Carruthers Student Commons space along with my team of eight staff.
I also serve as Vice Chair of the ASB HSE Committee. I came to the Alberta School of Business as a way to give back to the students. I remember my own experience here, and I am a big believer that you have to give back what you received — and a bit more. I aspire to ensure we have the best events possible in the Carruthers Student Commons and to create a positive, safe environment where students can thrive and grow.
What’s been your most memorable moment at the Alberta School of Business so far?
I was in a Fringe show last year and asked folks around the school if they would be willing to support me. On the second night I performed, there were well over 20 people from the Alberta School of Business in the audience. I have never received such support from a workplace, and to this day I am so thankful to have such wonderful colleagues here!
What’s one piece of advice you’d share with a new colleague joining the school?
Close the office door and go say hi to some new colleagues around the office. I know the first few weeks are a blur and you’ll do a rapid-fire meet and greet, but take some time to really get to know people. Everyone here is kind and supportive, and we have a lot of cool, interesting colleagues. Learn about them and what they do so you can feel more connected to our larger Alberta School of Business team!
